This two-day certification course will include 50% comprehensive review and 50% comprehensive testing. Testing will cover all practical and didactic portions of the prior high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust (HVLAT) manipulation series. The primary focus will be on the psychomotor and examination skills needed to safely and effectively deliver HVLAT to all diarthrodial and select synarthrodial joints. Also included will be testing on the mechanisms, safety, and efficacy of HVLAT for various neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Successful applicants will be able to use the Cert. HVLAT designation as part of their educational background.
All IMMT HVLAT courses have been approved for 15 contact hours by PT state boards where the courses are held, as well as the Board of Certification (BOC) for athletic trainers.
Course Objectives
At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Give a demonstration of mastery of HVLAT techniques for all diarthrodial & select synarthrodial joints of the human skeleton.
- Show, given a patient case scenario, practical application of clinical examination techniques to confirm/refute the appropriateness of spinal manipulation or non-vertebral HVLAT for neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
- Give an explanation to understand the biomechanical epidemiological literature regarding the relationship between cervical spine manipulation and cervical artery dissection.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the potential mechanisms by which HVLAT improves neuromusculoskeletal pain.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the literature regarding the efficacy of spinal manipulation or non-vertebral HVLAT for various neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
- Give a knowledge of the underlying kinetic/kinematic findings in the application of HVLAT to various skeletal segments.
- Have an understanding of the literature regarding the audible cavitation of HVLAT.
- Be evidence of knowledge of the physiological and accessory levers used in the application of spinal manipulation or non-vertebral HVLAT.
- Show how the knowledge of safety considerations that are important in employing HVLAT for various neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
